A trio from Stardust Bowl in Addison hit its target score twice in five games on the way to the $5,000 grand prize in the 2012 Miller Lite/ISBPA Baker Blast Area Finals Jan. 14. Keith "Skip" Grandpre (l.-r.), Linda Avent and team captain Ed Avent rolled games of 193-192-192-194-191 in the Baker-style event to deviate from their target score of 192 by only four pins (1, 0, 0, 2, 1) for the day. In addition to capturing the $5,000 grand prize for being the top-finishing team in the state, the Stardust bowlers won $500 for finishing first in their region. The Avents and Grandpre have socialized at Stardust Bowl for years. The men bowl together in a Thursday night league, and all three compete in a once-a-month couples league. Linda Avent also bowls in a Tuesday women's league. "We practiced [for this format] about three times," Linda Avent said. (A Baker game calls for team members to bowl one frame at a time in sequence to make up one game of bowling.) "Our strategy was to try to get off to a good start and get ahead [of what we would need] early in the game," said Grandpre, who carries a 223 average. "But the last game, we needed to finish with four strikes, so our strategy didn't work that time. Linda got the first strike, and I got the last three [for the 191 score]." "I wish more people would get into the tournament," Ed Avent said. "We had a lot of fun today."
Second place in both the region and the state went to another Stardust entry, a four-person team that included Mike Bodendorfer, Gary Granback, Ron Casper and Roy Schroeder. That team finished with a cumulative differential of eight pins from their target score of 200 (201-197-200-201-203).
